Activities for the Lab!

These lessons are generally in order from beginning of the year to the end of the year, but lessons can be mixed up to fit your class needs. ****Internet Math/Language Arts Practice (Unlimited Sessions) Show different games from these websites throughout the year based on skills your students need to work on.****
Show students Kindersite
(on the Jumping Kindergarten Website) and pick 2-3 games related to your curriculum to play. Show a game, then give them 5 minutes to play the game, show another game, give another 5 minutes to complete. This is a GREAT website FULL of educational games.

Following Computer Rules (1 Session)
Discuss the computer lab rules, talk about how to sit in the chairs, practice sitting in chairs, Assign each student a computer. Practice walking back and forth from Computers to Chairs , pass out Following Rules Activity Page, have students circle what is the correct behavior. Then on the back have them draw a picture of a good behavior. Handout Front Handout back.
Internet Safety (1 Session)– Read Faux Paw’s Adventures in the Internet, discuss Internet issues, teach movements for the three rules of Internet Safety. I keep safe, I keep away, and I keep telling (see chart below), Watch the movie "Faux Paw the Techno Cat" as a class, go to www.ikeepsafe.org and play games. Discussion Sheet

Internet Safety (1 Session)Review Three Keeps rules of Internet Safety. Introduce the Webville Outlaws (on wall), go to netsmartzkids.org and click on Activities, then watch Webville Outlaws, then try Clicky’s challengs, back to carpet and discuss outlaws
Parts of a Computer (1 Session)
Computer Parts – CPU, keyboard, monitor, mouse (go over how to hold a mouse and what "click" means), printer, scanner, power button, cd drive, headphones, input and output devices. Discuss what these items are around the room. Student go back to their computers and play the Computer Parts PowerPoint Game. They need to click on Start - My Documents - Computer Parts - then Double click on Computer parts - See picture below

Introduce the Internet (1 Session) -Demonstrate the Cursor VS the Hand. "When you see the hand! It means CLICK!" Show them how to start and close the Internet. Have students practice 2 -3 times.
-Show students when the cursor turns into a hand that means it is a link and to click. Show how to click the blue back arrow to go back to the previous page. Have students practice clicking on the Jumping Kindergarten and then clicking back 2-3 times.
-Practice navigating back and forth between websites by going to the Jumping Kindergarten, click on

and click on Kindergarten, then try each of the connect the dot activities.
Mouse Activities (1-2 Sessions)Review how to open and close the Internet, have students practice 2-3 times.
Discuss how to hold a mouse with the pointer finger on the click button and the thumb on the side of the mouse. Explain what click, double click, and click and drag is. Go to the Kindergarten Website to complete Mouse Activities.
Introducing TUX Paint (2-3 Sessions) Show students how to start TUX Paint, and how to close TUX Paint. Have them practice 3-5 times. Show students how to use the paintbrush, how to change color, how to use the Eraser, how to start a new picture. Have them practice these skills.
On a blank sheet: have students try to draw the following:
Faster Students can go on to draw a house.
Have students complete this activity 2-3 weeks in a row for their motor skills, as well as their mouse skills get better.
October Spelling List TUX Paint Activity (1 Session)Download Spelling List.doc , cut and pass out a spelling word to each student. Have them type the word, then the number and using the stamps, represent the number they have typed.
The Grumpy Bug (1 Session)
Introduce TUX Math (on going)Show students a keyboard and point out that today they will need to use the Number Pad to play a math game. Explain that their number lock needs to be on before they play the game. Have them practice turning on and off the NUM lock. Show students how to start and close TUX Math, have them practice this 2-3 times. Show students how to play TUX Math, go to Math Command Training Academy and click on the top "Numbers" to start, then go through each level. The will need to type in the number (or answer) then push ENTER. Have students go to their seats and practice TUX Math.
Thanksgiving Activity (1 Session)Have students draw a picture of what they are thankful for. Then have them type their name underneath their pictures using the ABC tool. Print.
When students have printed their picture out, have them work on TUX Math.
Math /Internet Practice (1-2 Sessions)Remind students how to start and close the Internet, have them practice 2-3 times. Tell students that they are going to a new website called "I Know that!" to practice their math facts. Start the Internet, click on the Jumping Kindergarten, Click on
, Click on Math Stories, Choose a Movie, Choose a Topic, then click begin. Go through 1 story as a class, then send students to their computers to do a Math Story.
WARNING: When all students are trying to access this website. the movie will load very slowly... just let students know to be patient.
Snowman Activity (1 Session)
Have students draw a picture of a snowman with a hat, eyes, mouth, scarf and any other decorations ONLY using the Paintbrush. Print when done.
Show students how to open and close Kid Pix, have them practice opening and closing Kid Pix 2-3 times. Have them explore all the buttons of Kid Pix.
ABC Book on Kid Pix (1-2 Sessions)
Tell students they are going to do a matching activity in Kid Pix. Show Example.

-Click on the Idea Machine 
-Double Click on Language Arts Folder
-Double Click on Alphabet Book
-Double Click on the letter
Use the Paintbrush to draw a picture of an object that starts with that letter. Use the Text tool to have students type their names on their picture. Print and put book together. Students who finish early can do another letter.
The Math Journey (CD-ROM) (This can be an ongoing activity or an activity they can do when finished with a technology assignment)
Show students how to hold CD-ROM, how to push button on computer to open up CD-ROM Drive, place CD-ROM into drive carefully, then press the button to close. When the Intro box pops up, click Start. Add student's name and click Begin. Go through each activity.
**Kindergarteners can probably get through the first two levels of the Math Journey before it gets tough!*
TUX Paint Valentine Activity (1 Session)Have students use TUX Paint (or Kid Pix) to draw a valentine's day picture. Print to give to someone.
Matching Activity on Kid Pix (1 Session)Have students Open Kid Pix, click on Animations, and make sure it is on the Alphabet.
Drag each letter of their first name on the page
Go to Stamps
Click on stamp that match a letter of your name and stamp underneath that letter.
Print when you have 10 stamps.
EXAMPLE:
Advanced Activity Click to download, Click OPEN to start activity. Have students use the stamps to match objects to the letters. You must open this on a computer that has Kid Pix!
